  It may be hard to believe, but I have only had a smartphone for two years. I was the proud owner of a flip phone throughout my middle school and college years. Sure, it had its drawbacks. Not being able to go on the Internet and download apps were the biggest disadvantages. Now that I have a smartphone, I could not imagine my life without it. Mobile communications have come a long way since the 90’s. Instead of friends calling each other on a landline, they are chatting on Facebook Messenger. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, people are using mobile apps like Zoom and WebEx to have video conversations from their homes. Strategic communicators trying to bolster their campaigns can take advantage of the various mobile technologies available. Digital Convergence: Changing the Media Landscape

  When I was in elementary school, I did not have a Facebook or Twitter to use to communicate with my friends. In high school, I had a Myspace page, but that was short lived. I remember getting my first Facebook page my sophomore year of high school. I enjoyed being able to talk to my friends. Facebook is an outlet I still use to this day. Since the launch of Facebook and Twitter, data has been created and replicated at a speed that seems to increase month after month. A study sponsored by EMC in 2011 stated that 1.8 zettabytes were created and replicated. That amount of data is equivalent to “every person in the United States tweeting 3 tweets per minute for 26,976 years nonstop” (McGaughey, 2011). Even 10 years later, the amount of data continues to grow. According to projections from Statista, there will be “74 zettabytes of data created in 2021” (CloverDX, 2021).   My name is Lindy Oller. I am a former journalist from Georgia. I worked as a reporter for the Opelika-Auburn News in Auburn, Alabama. I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications from the University of West Georgia.
